Wildfire Mitigation

The Colorado Springs Fire Department and Rocky Mountain Field Institute are beginning wildfire mitigation work on 30 acres east of the Captain Jacks Trailhead, along the north – south ridge. This project will affect nearby trails including Penrose Trail, Captain Jack’s, Captain Morgan’s, and others.

You may see crews with chainsaws and trees marked with colored flagging. Please do not remove any flags or paint markings – they are essential for safe and accurate mitigation work. ⚠️ Tampering with project markers is a fire code violation.

Temporary trail closures may occur throughout the project. Respect all posted closures and give crews plenty of space to work safely.
