Ridgway Area Trails Seasonal Wildlife Closure
From December 1 to April 30 annually, the Ridgway Area Trails (RAT) are closed to all use. This seasonal closure is in place to protect wintering wildlife. For more information, see link to the Uncompahgre Field Office Seasonal Closure website and associated map.
Winter wildlife closures are essential for the survival of deer, elk, antelope, bighorn sheep, and other species during their most stressful season. Instead of hibernating, these animals rely on fat reserves to survive. Disturbances from people or pets force them to flee, wasting critical energy.
As spring arrives, animals are at their weakest and food remains scarce, making this a peak time for winter-related deaths. Respecting the full duration of closures helps wildlife conserve energy and safely give birth in the spring.
