Signal Peak Seasonal Wildlife Closure
From March 15 to May 15 annually, the Signal Peak area and trails are closed to the public to protect wintering wildlife and Gunnison sage-grouse. Ridge Trail West, Cranor Hill Trail, Shoelace, Chicken Scratch, and Rasta Gulch trails are closed to all uses.
Winter wildlife closures are essential for the survival of deer, elk, antelope, bighorn sheep, and other species during their most stressful season. Instead of hibernating, these animals rely on fat reserves to survive. Disturbances from people or pets force them to flee, wasting critical energy.
The Gunnison sage-grouse is a federally-listed threatened species. The majority of the population is found in the Gunnison Basin, which provides critical sagebrush habitat essential for the bird’s survival. Habitat loss is the primary cause of population decline. By limiting disturbance during sensitive periods, this closure helps maintain and enhance vital sagebrush habitat.
