Buffalo Pass Elk Habitat Birthing Seasonal Closure
Reason
Wildlife Closure
Comment
From May 15 to June 15 annually, this area is closed to all entry and use-types. This seasonal closure is in place to protect elk and their habitat during birthing periods.
Human and pet activity can stress elk during birth and nursing and cause them to abandon their vulnerable calves. Elk may also act aggressively to defend their young, posing a safety risk to visitors.
Always leave young wildlife alone. It is not unusual to find calves and fawns alone, as the mother may temporarily leave the calf to find food. Your distance ensures their survival.
