717 Hayman Burn
Featured Route
The Hayman Fire started on June 8, 2002, 35 miles northwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado and 95 miles southwest of Denver, Colorado and became the largest wildfire in the state’s recorded history at over 138,114 acres. The first half of this route will take you through the southern part of the burn scar where all the vegetation was burned. The scar can help you appreciate the time it takes for the trees and foliage to recover from a forest fire. The Aspens are starting to take hold in the burned area, as well as some small ground cover. The second half of the route will wind you through intact forest of the northern Pikes Peak Ranger District, where bermed and whooped Pike Granite is the main trail surface.
