Starting at the Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) Visitor Center, this route showcases almost two miles of the Rio Grande River’s riparian habitat. Expect to see lush grasses,  dense stands of willow, and larger cottonwood trees.

Wildlife vary by season, with the following highlights:

- Spring: bald eagles, waterfowl, songbirds

- Summer: waterfowl, songbirds, beaver, muskrats

- Fall: shorebirds, waterfowl, Sandhill Cranes, songbirds

- Winter: bald eagles

- Year-round: elk, mule deer, coyotes, and porcupines

Unlike many nature trails, bikes are welcome but must yield to pedestrians. Dogs are also allowed on leashes.
