The Sand Hills Pass route is primarily for OHV’s but can be sued by bicyclers, horses, and highway vehicles. The route is mostly in State Forest State Park but there are some section in Medicine Bow National Forest. It begins at the Mendenhall Trailhead and winds through open areas and forest in the northern section of the park. There have been recent logging operations that have created great views looking east in places as well.

Most of the route is in good shape, with just a few areas you would need 4 wheel drive. However, if you go beyond the western/northern end point to little government creek road, the trail gets VERY difficult and only ohv’s or high clearance/modified vehicles should attempt.

Be aware of seasonal closures and contact the park if you are planning to use after September. IT usually opens by 6/1 every year.
