Mount Blue Sky
Mount Blue Sky is the closest 14er to Denver and the highest in the Mt. Evans wilderness. There are multiple routes to the summit but the West Ridge Trail is considered the standard route. It begins at the Summit Lake Parking lot and climbs steadily to reach the summit. It crosses over 13er Mt Spaulding in the process.
The only other route to the summit on an official trail is the West Ridge from the Chicago Lakes. Other routes begin at Guanella Pass and include the class 3 route on a ridge connecting to fellow 14er, Mt. Bierstadt.
Class: 2. The West Ridge is considered a class 2 route, meaning portions of this route are considered ‘off trail’. On this route it is due to rocky areas along the west ridge. The route is generally easy to follow with cairns. However, weather/environmental conditions may make following the route more difficult.
Trailhead/Parking: the road to summit lake is usually open ~Memorial day weekend to Labor day weekend. Also note, this is a federal fee area. Contact the US Forest Service for current road conditions and fee information.
