Redcloud and its closer 14er neighbor, Sunshine Peak are two relatively ‘easy’ straightforward 14ers. especially for the normally more rugged San Juans. They sit between Lake City and Ouray and are accessed via the famed Alpine Loop.

The well maintained trail begins from the Silver Creek/Grizzly Gulch Trailhead. This area can hold snow later than some trails so be aware of conditions in early summer. The trails itself is well defined and easy to follow for almost the entire route. You will pass through forest, by streams, and in beautiful meadows as you climb  up the northeast slope at 13,000 feet.

When you get to the Northeast ridge, you will turn right and follow the trail (although not as defined in places) until you reach the summit. Note, there are a false summit or two along the ridge.

Class: 2. Redcloud is considered class 2, due to rocky areas near the summit but much of it is on a very well maintained trail.

Trailhead/Parking: The Silver Creek/Grizzly Gulch trailhead is open seasonally (conditions dependent) so contact the forest service for current conditions. It is usually accessible by 2 wheel drive vehicles but some years it can be in rough shape, so a vehicle with a little clearance would be best.
