The Fern Lake trail is a scenic lake hike in the center of Rocky Mountain National Park. The 3.6 mile moderate out and back trail leave the Fern lake Trailhead and parallels the Big Thompson River for much of the hike. Not long after climbing out of the Big Thompson valley, you pass Fern Falls and then reach Fern Lake. Although Fern Lake is a nice destination on its own, this trail is often used to add Spruce Lake or Odessa Lake, both beautiful subalpine lakes. This trail also provides access to multiple backcountry camping sites but contact the park first as these need be reserved and often sell out shortly after being open to the public each year.
