Flattop Mountain Trail
Flattop Mountain is a scenic but difficult hike in the center of Rocky Mountain National Park. Beginning at the Bear Lake Trailhead, the Flattop Mountain trail climbs quickly and steadily through forest before breaking out into the alpine with amazing views of many of the other popular areas/peaks in the park. There are two overlooks on the way up, Dream Lake overlook and Emerald Lake overlook that both provide great places to stop to catch your breath and take in the views towards Long’s Peak.
The trail still climbs through the alpine before finally reaching the ‘summit’ of Flattop Mountain, which the name suggests, is mostly flat. From the summit you can turn around, continue on non official trails to Hallett Peak or one of its neighbors, or continue on to the west side of the park. This area is open in the winter but make sure to check avalanche forecasts and understanding of navigating through avalanche terrain before taking it on.
Note: The Bear Lake Trailhead can be very busy and the park does provide a free shuttle service. Contact the park or check their website for more information on parking.
