Cucumber Gulch

Cucumber Gulch is a tiny wildlife preserved tucked in between the ski resort and the town of Breckenridge. For its size, it packs a surprising diversity of wildlife. You may see beaver, fox, deer, elk, moose, and many bird species in the forests, meadows, and ponds here. Managed by the town and shared with the Nordic Center, the area is open for recreation year round, but special regulations apply because of its preserve status. Dogs are not allowed.

To explore the trails, begin from the Nordic Center on Ski Hill Road. In winter access may be limited/not possible and a fee may be required. A network of paths lead throughout the preserve so you can choose your own adventure. Don’t pass by the ponds too quickly if you want to look for animals, and hike in the morning or evening for your best bet at finding them. You can hike a maximum of only a few miles, and elevation gain is slight, so this makes the perfect outing for families with children or anyone seeking a relaxed day outdoors.
