This hike into the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness heads through a pine, spruce, and aspen forest until entering the upper Missouri Gulch.

At about 12,600 feet, you’ll turn sharply to the east to finish your climb up to the Elkhead Pass. This is one of Colorado’s highest passes with fitting views.

While this route depicts an out and back from the pass, more than enough for most hikers, the prepared climber can choose several ascents from here, including Missouri Mountain.  This trail can see relatively heavy traffic from climbers, especially on weekends.

Upon returning to the trailhead, a stroll across the road to the historic town of Vicksburg can be an educational cool down experience.
