Dixon Trail Loop via Dragons Backbone
This is a long hike. The difficulty rating is due to its length, and to the nature of the Dragons Backbone trail, which is narrow and runs right on the eastern rim of Cheyenne Mountain. There are no shortcuts. This is the shortest route to the top of Cheyenne Mountain. Vehicle traffic is not permitted on the mountain, so you can not arrange to have someone pick you up at the top. There is no backcountry camping in Cheyenne Mountain State Park, so you must do this hike in one day. Due to the length of this hike, an early start is highly recommended. Be aware of the weather, especially monsoon storms in the summer, which can occur on your way down. Dogs are not permitted anywhere on this hike, and only on certain trails in the park. Bikes and equestrians must dismount and tie-up about a mile before the summit and do the remainder on foot.
Entry fees do apply.
