On the banks of the Purgatoire River within Comanche National Grassland, Picket Wire Canyon is home to the largest dinosaur tracksite in North America. Over 1500 prints in 100 separate trackways have been uncovered over a quarter mile stretch of bedrock.

The canyon contains reminders of several periods of human history in the region as well. While difficult to find without a guide, rock art is scattered throughout the canyon. On the way to the tracksite, this route passes right by the ruins of Dolores Mission and cemetery for a glimpse into its Spanish heritage. While not depicted in this route, the historic Rourke Ranch is an addition three miles down the canyon.

Guided auto tours offer the only motorized access to the canyon and help tell the full story of the canyon and tracksite. Tours arereservable on Recreation.gov.

Interpretive signs provide helpful context on the site’s discovery, scientific research, and the dinosaurs themselves.  Tracks can be found on both sides of the river and include those from both the carnivorous Allosaurus and massive Apatosaurus.
