The Highland Mary area is a high-altitude, subalpine basin that is largely free of trees. The open meadows are filled with wildflowers in the late summer, providing beautiful views and excellent opportunities for photography. Water availability is not a problem, but all water used in this area should be filtered, due to Giardia. Do not camp on the lake shore.

This loop climbs steeply to Highland Mary Lakes, continues to Verde Lake, and returns via the Continental Divide Trail. It can be a much shorter trip if you turn around in the area of Highland Mary Lakes.
